Uran and Chirripó are the best combination you can have in a trek when visiting this park. This is a magnificent route that takes you to the highest peak of Costa Rica, the Chirripó mount. And as though it was not enough, conquer the Uran peak on the same day as well. The path has characteristics that are very different from any other place in the country. This route consists of 52 km in total that can be achieved in four days. It requires a good physical shape and a lot of passion for the mountains.
Due to the long distances and the fact that you have to carry your own stuff, this tour is suggested only for experienced hikers. It is also recommended to do hikes so your body can be ready for this trek.
Today, we arrive in San Gerardo of Rivas and check into the park office before 11:00 in the morning. An informative talk about the whole tour is given today so you can get ready for this journey to these two spectacular summits. Then, we will go to Herradura de Rivas, where they will have a delicious homemade lunch. After lunch a car will take us to the entrance of the path to make a walk of approximately 5 km, arriving at the Las Mesas cabin where we will spend the first night. Dinner is set at 6:00 p.m. and rest to start early the next morning.
The hike starts at 4:30 a.m. on this day. Breakfast is ready 5:00 a.m. and we set out at 6:00 a.m. The distance for today’s hike is 12 km all the way to “The Indians Refuge”. Once we arrive we have meals and get ready for the long walk the next day.
Another early departure at 3:30 am for this challenging hike. We have breakfast at 4:00 am to leave at 4:30 am. This day is the most demanding with a distance of 17 km and a higher elevation at 3200 M.S.N.M. The Uran peak at 3,660 M.S.N.M. and, of course, Chirripo 3,820 M.S.N.M after reaching the top, the descent is made to Base Crestones where upon arrival they will have lunch and dinner at 6:00 p.m
Start at 5:00 am breakfast 5:30 am to begin descending back to town where you can bathe and have a well-deserved lunch.
Items you may need are: Sleeping bag, poncho, hat, gloves, winter hat, sweater, fleece, hiking poles (very useful), hiking shoes, a pair of shoes to wear in at each shelter, bottle of water (1lt capacity the least),raincoat (during winter), and headlamp.

Where does this trek start?
After checking into the station in San Gerardo of Rivas, we go to Herradura village. From here, the trek begins. Other variations of this tour are also available so you may ask for the options and chose the one that best fits your expectations.
Can I spend the previous night in Herradura?
Yes. Ask about the trek starting early in the morning in Herradura, specially if you do think you can be before 11 am in San Gerardo to take the tour. It is important to know that it will also depend on wether there are other hikers taking the tour with another option.
How much time in advance should I book this tour?
During high season, lots of hikers visit the park. We suggest to start your reservation as soon as you have defined the dates so you avoid loosing the opportunity to take this wonderful trek.
